Sinus surgery, also known as sinus lift surgery, is a procedure performed to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw, particularly in the area of the molars and premolars. This is often necessary when there is insufficient bone height due to the sinus cavity expanding and encroaching on the oral cavity. Sinus surgery allows for the placement of dental implants in cases where the bone volume is inadequate to support them.
In many instances where you were told implant placement isn’t possible due to lack of bone, bone can be regenerated to allow for predictable and stable implant placement. Sinus surgery is very predictable and offers means to provide adequate bone.
There are two main techniques used in sinus surgery: the vertical or closed sinus lift and the lateral window or open sinus lift. Each technique has its advantages and may be recommended based on the patient's specific needs.
Vertical or Closed Sinus Lift:
The vertical sinus lift technique is a minimally invasive procedure that involves accessing the sinus cavity through the osteotomy prepared for implant placement. This technique is often used when the amount of bone needed is relatively small.
During the procedure, a small hole is made in the bone near the area of the sinus floor. The sinus membrane is then gently lifted upward, and bone graft material is packed into the space created between the sinus floor and the membrane. This encourages new bone growth and increases the height of the bone in the area. The implant can be placed the same day as the sinus lift procedure.
The vertical sinus lift technique is called "closed" because the sinus membrane is not directly accessed or exposed during the procedure. This minimizes the risk of complications and reduces the healing time.
To minimize trauma and improve outcomes during the vertical sinus lift procedure, we use Versah drills at our practice. Versah drills are specially designed to prepare the bone with greater precision and minimal trauma, promoting faster healing and optimal bone integration.
Lateral Window or Open Sinus Lift:
The lateral window sinus lift, also known as the open sinus lift, is a more extensive procedure used when a larger amount of bone is needed to support dental implants.
In this technique, a small window is created in the lateral wall of the sinus immediate above the area where the posterior teeth would be, allowing direct access to the sinus cavity. The sinus membrane is gently lifted upward, and bone graft material is packed into the space created. This stimulates new bone growth and increases the height and width of the bone in the area. Often times implants can be placed the same day as the sinus lift procedure.
The lateral window sinus lift provides more access to the sinus cavity and allows for a larger amount of bone graft material to be placed. It is typically recommended for more severe cases of bone loss or sinus pneumatization.
At our practice, we utilize the latest technology, including Piezosurgery, for precision and accuracy during the lateral window sinus lift procedure. Piezosurgery uses ultrasonic vibrations to remove bone tissue with high precision and minimal trauma to surrounding tissues. This advanced technology enhances the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.
Both the vertical and lateral sinus lift techniques are effective in augmenting bone volume in the upper jaw for successful dental implant placement. Our commitment to using advanced technology, such as Piezosurgery and Versah drills, ensures that our patients receive the highest standard of care with optimal outcomes. If you are considering sinus surgery for dental implants, we invite you to schedule a consultation to discuss your options and determine the most suitable technique for your needs.
